Astrocytes Take Center Stage in Salt Sensing

چکیده
study is its methodological simplicity. Lesion studies are often thought not to be informative about processing mechanisms; in other words they are often thought to answer the question ‘‘What does this area do?’’ rather than the (harder) question of ‘‘How does it do it?’’ But in using a wellstudied behavioral paradigm for testing discrimination learning in rodents and straightforward neurotoxic lesion methods, the authors have tested (and validated) a counterintuitive hypothesis formulated on the basis of neurophysiological observations in the same behavioral setting. This validation is very strong because the lesion method establishes causality, rather than simply correlation. This discovery did not require elaborate neurobiological techniques, and recalls the thoughts of von Bonin (1960) on then-new neurophysiological methods: ‘‘Much of this is all to the good, but the older approach should not be completely forgotten when one gets dazzled by the modern treatment of the subject.’’ Stalnaker et al. have shown that the lesion method can still dazzle, and has much to contribute in terms of elucidating the neural mechanisms of cognition.

Prediction of Soil Salinity Using Neural Network and Multivariate Regression Based on Remote Sensing Indices and Comparison: A Case Study of Qazvin plain's Salt Marsh
Introduction: The spatial and temporal distribution of salts in the soil, the great extent of the Iranian deserts, and the adverse climatic conditions prevailing over them make it difficult to accurately determine the parameters and field measurements in some cases. In the last two decades, the use of field techniques and their combination with remote sensing data has contributed significantly ...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effects of Climate Change on Salt Crusts Using Remote Sensing (A Case Study of Sabzevar Playa)
In this study, five sequences of Landsat sensors including MSS, TM, ETM+ and OLI at unequal intervals spanning 42 years between 1973 and 2015, were analyzed to investigate the spatial and temporal variation of salt crusts in Sbzevar playa, central Iran. Landsat satellite imageries and ASTER digital elevation model were prepared, and spatial-temporal analyses were carried out in ENVI and GIS. Fu...
متن کاملEvaluation and Determination of the Salt Tolerance Threshold of Some Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) Ecotypes at Seedling emergence Stage
Extended Abstract Introduction: Fenugreek, is a medicinal plant that has been considered as a salt tolerant crop. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of salt stress on seedling emergence characteristics and determination of the salt tolerance threshold, declivity of emergence and salt tolerance index of some fenugreek ecotypes. Material and Methods: Seeds of five ...
متن کاملEvaluation of salinity tolerance in rice genotypes
Salinity is considered as one of important physical factors influencing rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Knowledge of salinity effects on rice seedling growth and yieldcomponents would improve management practices in fields andincrease our understanding of salt tolerance mechanisms in rice. This study was designed to assess the role of Saltol QTL in regards to effects of salinity on plant gro...
متن کاملTrichostatin A Promotes the Conversion of Astrocytes to Oligodendrocyte Progenitors in a Defined Culture Medium
The generation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) offers tremendous opportunities for cell replacement therapy in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury. Recently, the prospect of reprogramming terminally differentiated adult cells towards another mature somatic cell or progenitor cells without an intermediate pluripotent state has been of interest...
